The most eco-friendly new solutions against synthetic materials

Among catwalks and new biotechnologies, even the clothing sector is increasingly entering the bioplastics market, with a new slogan dedicated to fashion: green is the new black.

This time it’s not just about the color that will be fashionable in a specific season, but about something much more revolutionary and concrete: the composition of the textile.

Plastic pollution is also related to the inclusion of some materials involved in the fibers of the fabrics based on petroleum such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, polyamide and polypropylene whose microparticles are then released during washing, until they disperse in the oceans.

Not only that, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2014 clothes constituted 9% of all urban solid waste produced in the USA, contributing to the problems of recycling complex materials that include mixed fibers among which the plastics.

This refers to synthetic garments. A practical example is sportswear that sees two essential elements in polypropylene and polyester.

In fact, the sporting advantages in wearing clothing based on these two plastics are lightness, breathability, thermal insulation and resistance to dirt and bacteria, but at the same time the amount of microplastics released during their washing contributes to the current unsustainable situation of global pollution.

The positive properties of polypropylene-based sports clothing could turn into polluting properties that become food for the entire marine fauna, or complex materials to be recycled.

A beautiful paradox that requires the intervention of new, more eco-friendly methods.

Thus, even in the fashion industry, bioplastics have become the alternative solution to the current challenges for environmental sustainability, on which new startups and giants of the sector are experimenting with different applications before affirming the new lines on the market.

Sustainable fashion in the bioplastics market

Innovative ideas include the use of new synthetic filaments based no longer on oil but on plants and renewable resources. Here is the famous secret of bioplasticbiobased and biodegradable as the EarthBi product – is now taken into consideration for the creation of new biological tissues.

    green is the new black

In fact, the raw material of the bioplastic can be worked and refined, using it together with other materials such as fabrics, fibers, threads, pigments, tape … obtaining a finished product that can be defined as green.

In this sense some fashion companies are feeling free to try. For example the combination of PLA bioplastic with cotton for the creation of new innovative models, while others produce new raw materials also based on PHA, dedicated to the creation of new bio-textiles.

A further innovative idea, which remains a partial solution to the problem of plastic pollution, is the creation of new clothing lines using recycled plastic material that, on the one hand carries out the re-use of the collected material, but on the other hand continues with the release of microplastics during washing and therefore does not safeguard the oceans.

In fact, recycling and reusing plastic materials are partial solutions, because they are not sustainable enough. The alternatives, which are more in line with the concept of green is the new black, show as protagonist the application of new sustainable materials, with zero environmental impact, worked to maintain the same daily habits that can thus replace plastic also in the fashion sector: this is only possible with bioplastics.

    green is the new black
