Cosmetic No Plastic: The choice of biodegradable raw materials

Beauty care and the environment protection from microplastics

Even the cosmetic industry is called into question when it comes to microplastics pollution, those plastic microparticles that invade seas and oceans, becoming food for fish and crustaceans and, consequently, also contamination for human food.

These microgranules present mainly in scrubs, gels, toothpastes, body cleansers, but also in creams and sunscreens, are the real threat to marine and environmental protection. Here is why the entire beauty care sector is moving to find alternative solutions, finding an answer in the choice of biodegradable raw materials: bioplastics.

Luxury brands as well as production companies are showing special attention on the issue of microplastic that often finds its origin in polyethylene, seeking innovation in the use of ingredients derived from biomass.

Polyethylene, in fact, is one of the most commonly used plastics in cosmetic products such as exfoliants, soaps, creams and gels, and its replacement is actually the true mission. The biomass, derived from plants and minerals, or as for the EarthBi bioplastic, composed of PLA from sugar cane, is inserted in the production process, after being extracted and processed with refined green chemistry systems, without polluting and remaining in line with the concept of taking care, considering not only personal care but environmental care too.

This innovation in the cosmetic field finds support also from institutions. In fact, it seems that the invitation to the cosmetics industry to suspend the use of microplastics by 2020 from the Cosmetics Europe association is slowly turning into law for each member state.

In any case, given that the current level of the emerging bioplastic market is still insufficient to meet all needs (global bioplastic production is growing strongly but still represents only 2% compared to plastic), this is how cosmetic companies are behaving.

Some are already testing and using natural formulas for products dedicated to rinsing such as sea salt, hazelnuts, rice grains, jojoba spheres. Others are practicing the elimination of plastic packaging, abolishing the packaging or replacing the plastic material with others that are ecologically harmless like paper.

Three tips for a Plastic Free Beauty Routine

Beauty routine is the set of those mechanical actions that any individual performs for personal care. They are called mechanical precisely because the habit takes over, without realizing how much plastic is used.

    beauty routine no plastic

Yes, right! Plastic is everywhere. Just enter into any bathroom to see how many cosmetic products are used in everyday life, and how many actually have plastic containers or microgranules. Liquid hand soap, toothpaste to brush teeth, and wipes but also face and body creams and all exfoliating cleansers and gels. Not only, make-up also contains plastic.

Already in the past, there was much talk of an investigation against glitter, given that scientific research has shown that the large quantity spread over the years has contributed to the microplastic substances pollution in the environment.

Therefore, thanks to all the plastic free initiatives, it is possible right now to take a closer look at one’s daily actions, without changing them, but trying to replace the usual cosmetic products with those that, both in composition and in the casing, contain only bioplastics and begin our plastic free beauty routine.

First of all, it is important to read the labels of bathroom products and immediately identify the presence or absence of polyethylene microplastics. Many famous brands, such as Orèal and Dior, participate in the initiatives “no plastic pollution” but on their products the polyethylene label.

A second point is to check recycling or biodegradability level of plastic cosmetic products containers, through the recycling code affixed directly to the material, appropriately choosing sustainable packaging, or no-packaging, or nake packaging (or naked).

Last but not least, proceed with the replacement of cosmetic products containing microplastics with vegan products, based on biomass, such as biobased and biodegradable bioplastics, contributing to the market growth of this eco-sustainable material, which does not pollute and above all it is fundamental for the health and beauty of the person and the environment.

    beauty routine no plastic
