The car manufacturer will take advantage of the decentralized Tangle technology in future smart cars to ensure maximum efficiency in delivering software updates.

At the beginning of the year, Volkswagen announced a partnership with IOTA. For the occasion, the Chief Digital Officer of the automaker, Johann Jungwirth joined the supervisory board of the IOTA Foundation.
As a result of their collaboration at the Cebit’18 Expo in Hannover, Germany, the two companies showed the new Proof of Concept (PoC) that will enable Tangle to be integrated into Volkswagen vehicles.

Tangle is a mining-free technology based on the DAG protocol. While IOTA, in fact, is a platform not based on blockchain technology, but on Tangle, and this allows, among other things, to record transactions with no value.
Thanks to the new PoC, Volkswagen can use the Tangle architecture to transfer “over-the-air” software updates to its cars, as part of the new “Connected Car” project.
Volkswagen’s goal is to use Tangle technology to distribute data securely and wirelessly to its new smart cars. In fact, according to some experts in the field, by 2020 there could be more than 250 million smart cars connected to the web in the world.
This will require frequent updates of on-board software remotely, securely, transparently and on a large scale.
According to the IOTA Foundation, the centralised ownership of the data makes it difficult to ensure that it is not compromised or tampered with in any way. Among other things, after the diesel gate scandal, Volkswagen was forced to increase its attention to transparency.
In this respect, a decentralized Tangle-based platform could really provide maximum security and transparency.
Among the benefits of this technology in smart cars will be the ability to provide certification to any third parties, manage recalls efficiently, and the ability to record a large volume of updates.
As Johann Jungwirth explained: “Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) are crucial for the future of trusted transactions. IOTA has great potential to become a DLT leader with the Tangle approach.”
