The year 2019 is now drawing to an end and this year too has been characterised by significant losses of cryptocurrencies and attacks on various exchanges from which a total of 178 million dollars have been stolen.
January 2019
On January 14th, 2019, Cryptopia was attacked and lost about $23 million, corresponding to 30,000 ETH. This led to the exchange closing several months afterwards, following the second attack suffered 2 weeks later.
March 2019
On March 24th, the DragonEx exchange was hacked, from which more than $5 million in crypto was stolen, including BTC, ETH, USDT, EOS and ABBC.
Whereas on March 29, the Bithumb exchange lost more than $19 million, including more than 12 million EOS and more than 6 million XRP, but, despite the loss, resumed operations in May.
May 2019
On May 7th there was a hard blow to the Binance exchange, from which 7000 bitcoins (BTC) were stolen and more than $40 million was lost. This was probably the cause of the slight drop in the price of BTC in those days.
Fortunately, Binance had preventively protected itself with the famous SAFU fund that allowed to cover the loss.
Towards the end of May, the GateHub service saw over 23 million XRP stolen, about $9.2 million dollars at the time.
June 2019
On June 27th it was the turn of the Bitrue exchange whose hacking led to the loss of more than 9 million XRP and more than 2 million ADA, for a total of more than $4 million.
The approximately 90 users who were affected by the loss were reimbursed by the exchange itself.
July 2019
On July 12th, more than 50,000 users of Remix Point’s BITPoint exchange lost approximately $28 million in assets such as BTC, BCH, ETH, LTC and XRP.
November 2019
On November 27th, the Korean exchange UPbit suffered and confirmed the theft of 342 thousand Ethereum (ETH), almost $50 million, and is still uncertain whether it will be able to recover the stolen funds.
For the time being, and excluding the hacks of recent days, the total funds that have been stolen as a result of various attacks in 2019 is around $178 million.
