Bitcoin Pizza Day: On 22 May, eight years ago he paid BTC 10,000 for the two most expensive pizzas in history. Today he has done it again, to demonstrate that the Lighting Network works

Today is the anniversary of the famous Pizza Day, a date that now all cryptocurrency fans consider a memorable event.

Of course, in theory, there would be little to celebrate, as they were the worst bitcoins spent in history… but first things first.

Exactly 8 years ago, Laszlo Hanyecz ordered two pizzas online, paying 10,000 BTCs, equivalent to just over 70 million euros today!

Laszlo, proud to have been able to pay for goods with bitcoin at a time when no one knew cryptos yet, reported what had happened on the famous BitcoinTalk forum. Since then, 22nd May has become a day to remember.

The two pizzas were ordered from Domino’s and, at the time of purchase, cost only $41.

There is even a Pizza Index, which indicates the current value of the bitcoins spent on the two pizzas.

The lesson wasn’t learned

What has gone unnoticed is that the famous developer struck again last February, buying more pizzas in BTC, this time using the Lighting Network protocol.

This time Hanyecz paid 649000 satoshis, or 0.00649 bitcoins, currently about $53.

Laszlo has become a figure halfway between a legendary person and an object of ridicule, given how much the pizza experiment has cost him.

At the time, however, its purpose was to demonstrate that bitcoins had real value and could be used as a means of payment even outside the Internet.

Once again he did it to show that the Lighting Network works and that bitcoin is on track to improve its scalability.
