Elon Musk, Mars and the Marscoin

Elon Musk would seem to agree that the future Mars economy could be based on cryptocurrencies

Despite the fact that Musk seems serious when it comes to Mars, which is his next big project, when he talks about cryptocurrencies he is often not serious. His recurring irony, not to say sarcasm, makes any of his remarks about it of dubious nature.

In this case, it all stems from a tweet by artificial intelligence researcher Lex Fridman who explicitly speculated that Mars’ economy will be based on cryptocurrencies

That tweet was answered by David F *HODL*, tagging Elon Musk himself, and ironically speculating that the main cryptocurrency could be Dogecoin

The satirical profile Elon’s World in turn responded by speculating about a new cryptocurrency, Marscoin, and at this point Musk personally replied “yes”.

So although the original tweet was probably meant to be serious, the two quoted responses are definitely ironic, hence Elon Musk’s further response is most likely so as well.

After all, he has already expressed himself ironically about cryptocurrencies many times in the past, although lately he seems to be taking the topic a little more seriously than in the past.

Nevertheless, it would not be wise to ignore these tweets, even if they are obviously ironic.

Elon Musk’s dream: to conquer Mars

As mentioned earlier, Mars is probably the project he cares most about, so much so that he explicitly declared “Mars, here we come”. However, even about this project Musk tweeted with his usual playful attitude saying “Mars is my souldog”.

Therefore this somewhat humorous behaviour is frequent in his tweets, even on serious topics that are of great interest to him, to the point that they cannot be interpreted as sarcasm, but simply as his natural way of doing things.

This doesn’t mean that he was actually nodding to the hypothesis that the future Mars economy will be Marscoin-based, but it also doesn’t mean that he’s not interested in the topic. In fact, the exact opposite would seem to be true: while not knowing what his opinion is on the matter, it is clear that cryptocurrencies are indeed triggering his interest
