The best cryptocurrency hashtags on Twitter

What are the top and most used hashtags on Twitter related to cryptocurrencies? Which ones are the most talked about?

There is a website that keeps track of how many times a day the main cryptocurrencies are mentioned on Twitter. It features a daily chart with all the main cryptocurrencies, from bitcoin to 0x.

As expected, at the top of this ranking there is the unrivalled Bitcoin hashtag: in the last year, it has been steadily over 15,000 mentions per day, with peaks of over 40,000 in June 2019.ย

Indeed, over the past year only TRX, although very few times, has managed to perform better than the lowest threshold of mentions obtained by Bitcoin in a day, reaching a peak of 25,186 on March 13th, when it surpassed the 18,492 mentions of Bitcoin. TRX’s mentions have now dropped over the past six months, slipping to fourth place.

The second crypto with the best daily trend, after Bitcoin, is currently XRP with just over 5,000 average daily mentions during 2019, and a peak of 10,910 recorded on September 18th.ย ย

In the third position, there is Ethereum (ETH), which follows XRP at a very short distance, with a daily average of just under 5,000 mentions, and a peak of 10,191 on July 31st.ย

TRON has slipped to the fourth position in recent months. Although in the first half of 2019 it exceeded 6,000 mentions per day with some periodicity, in the second half of 2019 it only rarely managed to exceed this threshold, with a maximum of 7,570 mentions on August 13th.ย

The downward curve is somewhat similar to the value of TRX, which was worth about $0.02 at the beginning of the year, rising to 0.04 in June. Since then it has dropped to just above $0.01, with a peak above $0.02 at the end of October.ย

All other cryptocurrencies have a significantly lower daily average, starting with Litecoin and EOS, which are the best among those not included in the top 4. In addition, the trend has been often downward over the months, also for Bitcoin Cash.ย

However, there have also been real abnormal peaks. The most sensational one concerns NEO, which on May 5th would have exceeded 78,000 mentions, surpassing even the maximum annual peak of Bitcoin. But since the daily average, even only on May 3rd, was less than a thousand mentions per day, and returned below a thousand in mid-May, the anomalous peak on May 5th seems rather dubious (it could be an error in the interpretation of the data by the platform).ย

The second anomalous peak was recorded by BitTorrent (BTT) on March 2nd, shortly after landing on the market, with 14,156 mentions, but they dropped to less than 2,000 already on March 10th, and then remained below a thousand in the second half of the year.ย

Another anomalous peak was that of Tether, with 10,569 mentions on June 17th, but fell well below 1000 already from July 1st.ย

Even Dash and Waves managed in some rare occasions to overcome Ethereum. Dash succeeded four times, with about 5,000 mentions per day, and even 7,184 on January 20th, while Waves did it only twice, with about 4,000 mentions. During the rest of the year, however, the average has always been around a thousand mentions per day.ย

The cases of Binance Coin, Bitcoin SV, Monero, Stellar, Cardano and IOTA are also curious, as they have almost never managed to collect more than a thousand mentions per day, except on rare occasions.ย

So, excluding anomalous peaks that could result in errors or exceptional events, to say the least, it is possible to divide the cryptocurrencies into five large groups as far as the number of mentions on Twitter are concerned.ย

In the first group, there is only Bitcoin, which dominates unchallenged over all the others, with an average of more than 15,000 mentions per day. In the second group, there are XRP, ETH and TRX, although the latter is in decline, with an average of around 5,000 mentions per day.ย ย

In the third group there are Litecoin, EOS, and at times Dash and Waves, as well as rare cases in which, for decidedly occasional events, some other cryptocurrency manages to be part of it. This group includes cryptocurrencies that have a daily average of about 1,000 to about 5,000 mentions per day.ย

The fourth group consists of a large number of cryptocurrencies, some of which are lesser-known, some of which are very well known, and which rarely exceed a thousand mentions per day, though at least an average of more than 100. In the fifth and last group, there are the truly minor cryptocurrencies that rarely manage to exceed the hundred daily mentions.ย
