Bitstamp hires former Gemini employee Caitlin Barnett

Yesterday Bitstamp announced that it has hired a new US Chief Compliance Officer, namely Caitlin Barnett, former employee of the Gemini exchange.

The new arrival will work at Bitstamp’s offices in New York City and her job will be to oversee day-to-day compliance operations, work with regulatory and law enforcement officers, and help Bitstamp anticipate and prepare for future regulatory changes.

She will also be working alongside Hunter Merghart, who recently took the role of head of operations in America.

Previously, Caitlin Barnett held the same position at Gemini’s offices, where she developed and implemented an advanced AML (Anti Money Laundering) and BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) compliance program, handled several compliance requests and was the leader of a group of over 20 industry professionals. Prior to Gemini, Barnett also worked as an assistant in the office of the Vice President of Compliance and also as an assistant to the Vice President and Board of Governors at JPMorgan Chase.

Barnett’s experience in this field, as well as her leadership in both the crypto and traditional finance worlds, could be vital to Bitstamp’s expansion into the US. Recently, Bitstamp also obtained the famous BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services.

There is a clear intention on the part of the exchange to be transparent, as stated by Bitstamp CEO Nejc Kodrič:

“We’ve always believed in the need for effective regulation. Our goal is to provide a safe and transparent trading venue. To achieve that goal in the US, we were looking for a senior compliance professional. Caitlin’s experience makes her an excellent fit for this role and we are pleased to have her lead our compliance management processes”.

Barnett was pleased to be part of Bitstamp’s new staff:

“This is an exciting time to join Bitstamp and help them carry what they’ve achieved in Europe over to the US,” said Caitlin Barnett, newly appointed Chief Compliance Officer at Bitstamp. “This is a company that has always been on the forefront in crypto compliance. I look forward to continuing that journey alongside their team”.
