Film review of “Crypto” starring Kurt Russell

The following is a review of the film “Crypto” starring Kurt Russell. It was released almost a year ago in the States.

The film recounts the story of tax auditor Martin Duran who returns to his hometown to find out if a local art gallery, OMNI, had something to hide.

It becomes clear from the very beginning of the film that bitcoin is involved.  Here’s a conversation from “Crypto”:

“Why does this stuff keep asking me bitcoin. Do you really accept them here?”

“Absolutely yes, I prefer them because they’re fast, cheap, private and above all the government can’t take them away from you.”

“Let’s be honest, nobody in this town knows what a bitcoin is.”

“Just give it time.”

During the film, there is a mining rig that is located in the warehouse of the town’s supermarket and which is used to mine a phantom crypto called “Delta Coin”, defined as more advanced than bitcoin in the film.  The film explains that only 10% of the revenue is spent to keep all the machines running.

Unfortunately, this is yet another film in which bitcoin is used for fraud, by the Russian mafia to be precise, and in which cryptocurrencies don’t sound too great, although in one scene a friend of Martin’s explains that it’s not true that they are used only for illegal activities:

“Cryptocurrencies aren’t just in the Deep Web.”

Anyway, the film appears very slow and very aseptic. It was hard to relate to the character.

Kurt Russell, who seemed almost the main character when the film was presented, is actually just an extra. He plays the role of Martin’s elderly father, the owner of a bankrupt farm.
